Forum on Oral Communication Anxiety/ Apprehension

Hi Classmates,

First of all, I would like to congratulate and thanks Miya for initiating this Class Blog. For the purpose of TSL 756 Forum Participation Assessment, I would like to introduce a simple topic for us to deliberate.
The topic read as follows: Oral Communication Anxiety /Apprehension

To start the ball rolling, let us identify a few possible reasons for students' inability to effectively deliver presentations. Then we can continue to propose some training strategies designed to help students develop a proficiency in the area of oral presentations.

For the records, according to Krannich (2004), the fear of delivering a speech or a presentation ranks as the number 1(one) fear among most people, including students as well as adults from many diverse backgrounds.

OK then. Over to all of you. Feel free to contribute your ideas and where necessary, I shall become the moderator.

Regards.

Wah! Can't believe this heheh.. we actually have a blog dedicated for M.Ed course. Congrats to the creator Miya & moderator K.dilla.
Anyhow, from my short stint of experience teaching ESP learners... Few possible reasons:
1)unprepared,
2)lack of confidence,
3)not used to giving presentations in public or at work,
4)not fluent in speaking English, writing normally ok,
5)lack presentation skills,
6)not appropriately dressed
and 7)lack of practice.

So when you design a course for this group, it is a must to consider the aforementioned reasons. However, remember what Dr.Parmjit said about 'relation', looking at such aforementioned variables can be predict certain sample's behavior but cannot cause the behavior.

Thumbs up for Mia & Dila. Well! I had the opportunity to do a small study on similar topic since most lecturers have always been commenting on students' presentation skills.

Anyway, the findings concluded that students should be exposed/trained in public speaking. Once they are exposed to the techniques/tips to overcome their anxieties/fear and what have you; then they should be taught the art of presentation-for e.g. presentation skills (eye-contact/gestures/getting the audience attention, Q&A skills, eliciting feedback, etc.) I believe when the above is done next is to practice and practice to make it perfect....with God's will insyallah!!!!

Yes, I couldn't agree more with all of you. If you want to "sell" your presentation to others the most important thing to do is practice, practice and more practice. Practice your speech as many times as you need to until you feel the presentation flows. As you practice giving your speech, imagine presenting the speech beautifully. It is well known that if we imagine ourselves doing something well, this will help our performance immensely as they say, the power of the imagination is very strong! And by the way, no speech will be loved by everyone and no speech will be "perfect" because everyone likes different things!

Just to add a bit. To speak effectively in front of a group is "...a skill that has to be taught and needs to be inculcated throughout college life and into the job market.."

WOW!!
First of all, I would like to congratulate the creator of our class blog Kak Mia and the moderator Kak Dila.
In simpler version of the question raised by Kak Dila, instead of coming out with the reasons, i converted it into the things thay should have.
1. preparation.
2. planning.
3. practice.

With these three things being done, it is impossible for the students to have weak presentation.
As simple as that. If you are not prepared, then it will show.
This is when actions speak louder than words.

Finally my turn!!!

This matter is very close to home...as a student, i do experience this once in a while, especially when it comes to poor preparation and LOW SELF ESTEEM....sometimes even after well preparation and practise,we often feel nervous if we notice tat people around us manage to come out with way better performance...
I guess, in order to do well preparation, planning and practise as what IRDA recommended must be taken into serious consideration....and maybe, if you want to dare others, you should always try for something different...so that it will spice up the performance...

Yes,Nidana. Trying somthing different to spice up performance is something to think about. But, sadly, not many students want to try something new to ensure their performance at its best. By and large, I am of the view that it is the skills that make the difference.

First of all, congrats to both Miyyah and Dilla for their sincere efforts in creating this blog. I'm one of the newbies in blogging. But the saying that is now a cliche "practice makes perfect" is undeniable. Well, Irda's 3 basic principles in presentation are correct. (Not correct3x ye..)and what I would like to add here is that presentations can be made less threatening and more enjoyable if you confront the issues that cause you anxiety and make an action plan for each. And one way of tackling a presentation is to break down the issues into manageable chunks and deal with them one by one(I think we do this often in the outline). But one thing that we should bear in mind is we have to know who our audience are and prepare our presentation to suit them. (Jgn syok sendiri ye..hehe)

Yes, Non. I agree on the part that we need to know whom we are presenting to in order to be more prepared. But then, we cannot deny the feeleings of apprehension that would envalope us before we start the presentation! To quote DrFaizah and ProfHaz said, ".. when you have butterflies in your stomach before a presentation, that means you want to do your very best.." So,c/mates, go ahead and have more butterflies!!
